Taiko Drumming in Colburn Park

Taiko Drumming in Colburn Park In-Person

Join us on Saturday, August 5th for an exhilarating hands-on drumming workshop led by Burlington Taiko at Colburn Park. Taiko, meaning "big drum" in Japanese, is a captivating revival of ancient Japanese drumming traditions. Since 1987, Burlington Taiko has been captivating audiences with their powerful, spellbinding, and propulsive taiko performances.

In collaboration with Upper Valley Music Center, Lebanon Libraries, and the Hopkins Center for the Arts, we are delighted to bring you a free taiko drumming workshop, designed for participants aged 10 and above. This workshop is presented in conjunction with Burlington Taiko's performance at the Hopkins Center, ensuring an immersive and authentic experience.

Taiko drumming has its roots in festival celebrations, aiming to entertain and inspire entire communities. The workshop, led by Sensei Paton, will not only teach the basics of taiko drum technique but also provide insights into Japanese culture, the origins of individual pieces, the history of the art form, and anecdotes from Paton's 40 years as a performer.

Over the course of 90 minutes, participants will learn to play a traditional "matsuri" or festival music piece while absorbing elements of sword form, tai chi, and dance that contribute to this powerful yet graceful technique. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to engage with the rich cultural heritage of Japan through the dynamic art of taiko drumming.

The workshop will take place from 3:00 to 4:30 pm, accommodating a maximum of 35 participants. Pre-registration is required to secure your spot, as space is limited. We encourage you to reserve your place early to avoid disappointment. Observers are also welcome to attend at no cost and do not need to RSVP.

Our preferred location for the workshop is Colburn Park, providing a vibrant outdoor atmosphere. In the event of rain, we have arranged the community room as an alternative location.

Don't miss this extraordinary chance to immerse yourself in the rhythmic world of taiko drumming. Participation is free, thanks to the collaboration between Lebanon Libraries, the Hopkins Center for the Arts, and Burlington Taiko. Register now and get ready to experience the power, energy, and cultural significance of taiko drumming firsthand.

Please pre-register to secure your spot, and we look forward to drumming with you on August 5th!
